Danny D. Dennis, Age 16, Killed In Truck-Train Crash

A truck-train accident two miles west of Table Grove Saturday morning, Mar. 1, 1980, resulted in the death of a 16-year-old Table Grove youth.

Danny D. Dennis, 16, of Table Grove died at about 12:04 p.m. at the McDonough District Hospital in Macomb from injuries he sustained when the pickup truck, driven by his father, John D. Dennis, 40, of Table Grove, was struck by a Burlington-Northern train on a gravel road at approximately 10:25 a.m. Saturday.

The father was listed in fair condition at McDonough District Hospital Monday, and a passenger, Terry T. Sheets, 15, of Lewistown was in serious condition at St. Francis Hospital in Peoria. Sheets was transferred to Peoria from McDonough Hospital at Macomb.

According to state police reports, the Dennis truck was southbound on a gravel road at a crossing when the westbound train struck the vehicle in the driver’s side door. The crossing is not guarded and has no crossing lights.

Danny D. Dennis was born Aug. 26, 1963, at Havana, the son of John D. and Mary (Bevard) Dennis. He was a sophomore at VIT High School.

Survivors include his parents; a sister, Peggy, at home; a brother, Michael of Table Grove; and a grandmother, Mrs. Fern Dennis of Table Grove.

Funeral services for Danny D. Dennis will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Vermont Methodist Church with Rev. Claude Curry officiating. Burial will be at Miner Cemetery.
