Former U. S. Senator William H. Dieterich, 64, of Beardstown, died suddenly Saturday night in his hotel room in Springfield. Heart trouble was given as the cause of death.
Dieterich served in the United States Senate from 1933 to 1939 after having served a term as congressman-at-large. He decided not to seek re-election in 1938.
As a Senator, Dieterich supported President Roosevelt’s supreme court program. He was one of the leaders in a campaign for repeal of the prohibition laws while in congress.
Since his retirement from the senate, he had devoted much of his time to law practice at Beardstown. Born March 31, 1876, at Cooperstown, Ill., Dieterich entered public life as county judge of Schuyler county. He served in the Illinois legislature from 1916 to 1921.
He was a veteran of the Spanish-American war and was chairman of the Four Minute Men of his country during the World War.
He is survived by his wife, and daughter, Mrs. Ruth Dieterich Kalthoff of Beardstown and a son William J. Dieterich of Alton.
Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon in Beardstown at the Methodist church.
