JOSEPH A. DEEMS

Joseph Deems

LEWISTOWN — On Tuesday of last week Joseph A. Deems, a well-known citizen of Lewistown, died at Hotel Waggoner in this city. He was a soldier in the Civil War, enlisting in August 1861, being a member of Co. A., 55th Ill., Inft. He was never married, and had for many years been a cripple. In 1872 while celebrating the election of General Grant a cannon that was being used for that purpose bursted, a large chunk of the metal striking his foot in such a way as to make amputation necessary, and since then he has gone on crutches. He was born in Ohio and had lived in Lewistown since 1840.
