Shirley CogarShirley J. Cogar, 83, of Havana died at 8:15 a.m. June 29, 2018, at her home.

She was born Oct. 28, 1934, in Havana, a daughter of Charles T. and Florence M. Hobbs Bennett. She married Kenny Cogar on Jan. 7, 1963, in Springfield. He preceded her in death on Aug. 24, 2000.

She also was preceded in death by one son, Jerry L. Holmes; one grandson, Steven D. Holmes; one great-granddaughter, Whitney Lane; and one sister, Lana Sue Bennett.

Surviving are three sons, Danny (and Karen) Holmes, Merle D. (and Debbie) Holmes and Jeff A. Cogar, all of Havana; three daughters, Connie L. (and Charlie) Selby and Kim J. Cogar, both of Havana, and Melanie J. (and Dick) Mohlenbruck of Frederick; one brother, Steve (and Jennifer) Bennett of Forest City; 26 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was a secretary for the State of Illinois for many years, working in Paul Powell’s office at the state capital. She last worked at the Mason County Health Department in Havana.

She was a member of Graceland Covenant Community Church in Havana and the Havana VFW Post 6408 Ladies Auxiliary.

Graveside services were held Tuesday at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Havana with Brother Mike Floyd officiating. Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria was in charge of arrangements.
