Charles “Red” ClaytonCharles Howard “Red” Clayton, 89, of Grand Prairie Retirement Center in Macomb, formerly of Vermont, died at 8:53 a.m. May 7, 2017, at McDonough District Hospital in Macomb.

He was born April 3, 1928, the son of Charles Garnet and Abbie Hott Clayton in McDonough County. He married Marcile “Midge” Bowman in 1948 in Macomb. She survives.

Also surviving are six children, Paulette (and Dr. Gary) Payne of Austin, Texas, Elaine Clayton of Galesburg, Michael (and Pat) Clayton of Walcott, Iowa, Mark (and Mary) Clayton of Ave Maria, Fla., Janet (and Brad) Hall of Vermont and Karen (and Thomas) Akers of Carol Stream; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He graduated from Industry High School in the class of 1946. He was a farmer, carpenter and was employed at Haeger Lamp Company from which he retired in 1993.

He was a member and past trustee of Vermont United Methodist Church, and was a member of the Farm Bureau.

Cremation rites have been accorded. Private inurnment will be held at a later date in the Chockley Cemetery in Eldorado Township.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Wesley Village Community Center in Macomb. Reverend Robert Greene will officiate. The family will meet with friends following the service from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Clugston-Tibbitts Funeral Home in Macomb is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials be made to Grand Prairie Garden Fund or Mississippi Valley Blood Center.
