Glenn L. Coons, 76, of Maquon died at 6:53 a.m. Thursday, March 13, 2003, at Knox County Nursing Home in Knoxville.

He was born March 3, 1927, in Rock Island, the son of Glenn Ray and Elsie Mae Clothier Coons. He married Barbara W. Swigart in Galesburg. He later married Ruthanna Burnett Westfall on Feb. 25, 1978, in Maquon. She survives.

Also surviving are one son, Glenn R. of Macomb; two stepsons, James Westfall of East Galesburg and Mikeal (and Stacie) Westfall of Galesburg; four daughters, Roberta (and Charles) Schacht and Elizabeth Coons, both of Tulsa, Okla., Glenna West of Galesburg and Susan (and Mike) Wickert of Ipava; one sister, Velma Collins of Galesburg; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister.

A life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, he was an Army veteran, serving in Japan for two years.

He worked at Butler Manufacturing in Galesburg and later owned and operated West Main Coal Yards in Galesburg from 1971 to 1986. He last worked for Southards Car Wash in Galesburg, retiring in 1995.

He was a member of Galesburg Men's Bowling League.

Services were held Tuesday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel with Rev. Milton Marquith officiating. Burial was in Avon Cemetery in Avon, where military rites were conducted by Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285.

Memorials may be made to the Galesburg Humane Society or to any charity.
