Col. George Clay Cox died Tuesday of last week at his home in Rochester, New York. It will be remembered that Mr. Cox spent several months in Astoria a short time ago.

The following article was taken from the Jacksonville Journal of recent date:

“I. M. Bunce of this city has received word of the death of an old classmate, Col. George Clay Cox, wealthy resident of Rochester, New York, who died at his home Tuesday morning.

“Mr. Cox was born in Virginia, Illinois, Feb. 14, 1857, and lived in that vicinity until he moved to New York at an early age.

“It was known that Mr. Cox, who was a piano manufacturer in Rochester, was one of the millionaires of that city.

“Several years ago when Mr. Cox was visiting in Illinois he underwent an operation for cancer. Because his recovery was so complete, and because he was so grateful to his physician, Mr. Cox offered to finance operations for any persons afflicted with cancer who could not afford treatment.

“The decedent was a son of Jerry and Almeda Freeman Cox, Cass county pioneer residents. He leaves his widow, formerly Miss Kate Babcock, to whom he was married in November, 1899, a daughter, Mrs. John Gilbert Goddard, Rochester, N. Y., and other relatives in Cass county.”
