George BreckenridgeGeorge J. Breckenridge, 84, of Yates City, formerly of Lewistown, died at 10:43 a.m. Nov. 29, 2012, at Graham Hospital Emergency Room.

He was born May 15, 1928, in Lewistown, a son of George and Jennie Quigley Breckenridge. He married Maureen Sue Reinhardt on Jan. 12, 1952, in Paloma. She survives.

Also surviving are six children, Dave (and Loni) Breckenridge of Buffalo, Minn., Steve Breckenridge of Farmington, Joe (and Becky) Breckenridge and Jack Breckenridge, both of Yates City, Sue (and Kurt) Butterfield of Morton and Jim Breckenridge of Kewanee; three sisters, Dorothy Jones and Jean Scott, both of Lewistown and Mary Hatch of Kennebunk, Maine; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother.

He graduated from Lewistown High School in 1946.

After high school, he enlisted in the United States Army and served in Japan and Korea with the 2nd Infantry Division. He was a recipient of a Purple Heart and two bronze stars.

He attended Bradley University and Western Illinois University, and also attended banking schools in Carbondale and Madison, Wis. He began his career in banking in 1952 at Lewistown National Bank. In 1954, he began working for Bank of Yates City and continued his career there for over 55 years before retiring.

He was a member of Faith United Presbyterian Church in Yates City, Antique Automobile Club of America and had been a volunteer fireman for Yates City Fire Department.

Services were held Monday at his church with Pastor Chris Deacon and Pastor Dennis Fitzgerald officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery in Lewistown with military rites conducted by Lewistown VFW Post 5001 and American Legion Bishop Post 1.
