Viola BennettViola A. Bennett, 86, of Rushville died at 5:30 p.m. May 6, 2009, at Snyder’s Vaughn-Haven Nursing Home in Rushville.

She was born April 23, 1923, in Worthington, Minn., a daughter of John and Ida Schoo Henning. She married Cecil R. Bennett on March 31, 1945, in Sibley, Iowa. He preceded her in death on May 12, 1996.

She also was preceded in death by three brothers, Qurenis, Arnold and Donald Henning; and three sisters, Loretta Paine, Geraldine Henning and Dorothy Burr.

Surviving are four sons, James C. (and Ann) Bennett of New Hampton, Iowa, Richard J. (and Pamela) Bennett of Pittsfield, Larry (and Deb) Bennett of Rushville and Jeffrey J. (and Teresa) Bennett of Macomb; one daughter, Barbara (and Craig) Schoonover of Canton; two brothers, Jack (and Judy) Henning of Glencoe, Minn., and Bill Henning of Jordan, Minn.; four sisters, Esther (and Kenny) Benedict and Inez Coulter, both of Lamberton, Minn., Leona Asham of Shakopee, Minn., and Wilda (and Jim) Myers of Apple Valley, Minn.; 18 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

She worked as a clerk at A&P Store and Kerr Hardware in Rushville before she worked as a nurse’s aid at Culbertson Memorial Hospital in Rushville for many years, retiring in 1984.

She was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church and Schuyler American Legion Auxiliary Post #4. She served on the board of Schuyler County Senior Citizen’s Center and was director of Meals on Wheels program. She also was a member of the Wednesday night women’s bowling league, where the team won a state title.

Services were held Saturday at Wood Funeral Home in Rushville with Rev. Rob Kirkham officiating. Burial was in Rushville City Cemetery.
