Willis BeairdWillis Evan Beaird, 83, of Lewistown died at 11:20 a.m. Wednesday, July 9, 2003, at Graham Hospital Extended Care in Canton.

He was born Sept. 3, 1919, in Bernadotte, a son of Grover and Lena Munson Beaird. He married Shirley Walters on Aug. 18, 1945. She died in 1986.

He also was preceded in death by four sisters.

Surviving are two sons, Gerald (and Connie) of Magnolia, Texas, and Richard (and Carolyn) of Austin, Texas; four brothers, William (and Evelyn) of Canton, Doyle of Bartonville, Grover "Zeke" (and Joanne) of Norris and Duane of Creve Coeur; three sisters, Audrey Pickel and Charlotte Beaird, both of Bartonville, and Twila Simpson of Washington; a close friend, Nelda Cooper of Lewistown; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A member of Lewistown Veterans of Foreign Wars and Ipava American Legion, he was a World War II Army veteran and received the Purple Heart, the Silver Star and the Bronze Star.

He was a farmer for 38 years before retiring.

He was of the Christian faith.

Services were held Saturday at Murphy-Sedgwick Memorial Home in Canton with Rev. Kevin Kessler and Rev. Terry Westerfield officiating. Burial was in Howard Cemetery in rural Smithfield, where military rites were accorded.

Memorials may be made to Ipava American Legion or Graham Hospital Extended Care East.
