Former Abingdon resident Weldon A. Bates, 89, of North Little Rock, Ark., died at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Apr. 24, 1983, in St. Vincent’s Hospital, Little Rock.
Born March 3, 1894, in Summum, he was the son of Jerard and Mary Bates. He married Helen Burgess at Abingdon. She died in 1964.
Surviving are two step-sons, Ronald Burgess of Abingdon and Junior Burgess of Peoria; one daughter Florence Celio of Little Rock; two step-daughters, Charlotte Cunningham of North Little Rock and Sally Roach of Green Rock; five grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 18 great, great-grandchildren.
Mr. Bates had been a riverboat captain for 30 years before retiring.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday in Larson Funeral Home in Abingdon with Rev. Charles Bennett officiating. Burial was in Abingdon Cemetery.
