JOHN WHITE “DOC” BARTHOLOW

J. W. Bartholow Dies Suddenly Monday Morning

This community was greatly shocked Monday morning when the news spread of the sudden death of J. W. Bartholow, which occurred at his home [film scratched — illegible].

“Doc,” as he was more familiarly known throughout the county, had been in failing health since last fall when he suffered a paralytic stroke which left him almost blind. Death is attributed to a second stroke.

Mr. Bartholow has been a life long resident of Astoria. For many years he was engaged in buying and shipping horses and mules. It is said that he was one of the best, if not the best, judges of horses in central Illinois. His shipments to St. Louis and Chicago markets covered many car loads. He was also engaged in the harness and buggy business for many years, doing an extensive business.

His sudden death is a shock to his invalid wife who has been bedfast for the past several months. Mrs. Lutie Robertson has been here, caring for them for more than the past year.

J. W. Bartholow was born in Knox county, Ohio, Oct. 31, 1847. He came to Illinois with his parents when 21 years of age and has since resided here. He was united in marriage to Rebecca McClelland on Nov. 15, 1891. No children were born to this union.

Besides his wife he is survived by one step-daughter, Mrs. Lutie Robertson of Two Dott, Mont. Also one sister, Mrs. Alice Grimwood of Oklahoma City, Okla.

Funeral services were held this afternoon at 2:00 o’clock, at the home, conducted by Rev. E. W. Braun, pastor of the Astoria Christian church. Interment in the Astoria cemetery.
