ROBERT L. BEATY

Summum Loses Old Resident

Robert BeatyRobert L. Beaty, a pioneer resident of South Fulton, died suddenly at his home in Summum, at about 3 o’clock Monday morning, aged 78 years, six months and sixteen days.

For more than three score years Mr. Beaty has been prominently identified with the affairs of South Fulton.

He was held in high esteem by a large acquaintance. His long life has been spent in the peaceful but arduous and worthy pursuit of farming. He left the farm a few years ago and located in Summum to enjoy the sunset of his career in a well-earned rest and retirement.

Robert L. Beaty was born in Coshocton county, Ohio, July 23, 1841.

Besides his aged wife he is survived by two brothers, Peter of Kerton township and Dr. I. L., of Fairview, and two sisters, Mrs. Joseph Stephens, of Linn county, Kansas and Mrs. George Salisbury, of Woodland township.

Mr. Beaty was an early settler of this community. In 1851, with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Beaty, he came to Illinois overland in two wagons and was six weeks on the road. At that time the greater part of Fulton county was still in heavy timber. There were no railroads in these parts and they crossed only two railroad tracks in coming from the East. All the freighting in those days were done by boat on the river.

Like many others of his age, Mr. Beaty’s educational opportunities were limited to the district schools which were very few. The school house which he attended was built of logs, with clay daubing, and was known as the Hickory school.

On June 10, 1866, he was united in marriage to Miss Edith Shields. No children were born to this union.

Politically Mr. Beaty was a Democrat of the Jeffersonian type. He never aspired to any public office.

His sudden demise was a shock to his many friends and associates, as on the day previous to his death he was apparently enjoying good health.

Funeral services were held today at 10 o’clock at the residence conducted by Rev. S. S. Blough, of Astoria. Interment in the Summum cemetery.
