NATHANIEL CLAXTON BORDWINE SR.

VeteranLived Over 100 Years.

Death of Nathaniel Bordwine at an Extreme Old Age — A Notable Citizen.

At 11:10 p.m., at his home in Lewistown, Nathaniel Bordwine, an aged and beloved citizen, passed into the never-ending life. His age was 100 years, 9 months and 19 days. He rejoiced in the privilege conferred upon but few of completing a full century of life. Decay and death came upon him but slowly. His nature was that hardy and persistent sort peculiar to the early pioneers of the west. His mental and physical powers were alert till near the end of life’s long span. Death came not by disease but in the natural course of old age.

For a number of years preceding his death Mr. Bordwine professed belief and faith in the christian religion. He never united with any church, but was disposed toward the Baptist denomination.

The living children of the deceased are as follows: Lewis Bordwine, Maria Harrison and Phoebe Moore of Dillon, Montana; Prudence Fleming of Rocky Ford, Colorado, and Emma Pixley of Kansas. Mrs. Bordwine, his wife, also survives.

Nathaniel Claxton Bordwine was born October 5, 1799, in Albemarle county, Virginia, son of Louis E. Bordwine, a native of Germany, who acquired a little fortune as a merchant tailor, and died three weeks before the subject of this sketch was born. Until 13 years of age he was taken care of by his grandfather “Tuggle,” in Washington county, Virginia, and afterward by his mother in Russell county. In 1822 he married Olive Robbins, a native of the latter place and daughter of Wm. Robbins, and they emigrated to Vermilion county, Illinois, in 1825, and in 1827 came to Fulton county, where they by hard work, soon accumulated means enough to purchase a quarter section of land in Lewistown township. To them three children were born, viz.—Sally, Anna and Polly. Mrs. Bordwine died in 1834. November 27, 1849, Mr. Bordwine was married again, this time to Elizabeth Simms of Virginia, a daughter of Tandy and Mary (Reddis), of the same state. To this union were born seven girls and four boys, viz.—Mary F., Amy L., Martha A., Olive M., Prudence E., Phoebe C., Margaret J., Lewis E., Nathaniel C., Tandy Oliver and Reuben M. From Lewistown Mr. and Mrs. Bordwine removed to Liverpool township in 1861 where he lived for a number of years and from there moved to this city where he has lived up to the present time.

The deceased has cleared 875 acres of land and improved five or six different farms. At the time of death he possessed a number acres of land, besides other property. Stock raising was his specialty. He was a soldier of the Black Hawk war. In politics he was a republican.

Funeral Thursday at 2 p.m. from the residence, Rev. C. H. Williamson officiating.
