Thomas AshwoodThomas Russell Ashwood, 97, of Macomb, formerly of rural Vermont, died at 12:39 p.m. April 16, 2018, at McDonough District Hospital in Macomb.

He was born Oct. 29, 1920, in Eldorado Township, the son of Thomas Glenn and Golda Rae Billingsley Ashwood. He married Carmen Kost on Nov. 16, 1947. She survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Susan (and John) Kissick of Quincy; one son, Stephen (and Janice) Ashwood of Macomb; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Madelyn Bennett.

He graduated from University of Illinois with a bachelor of science degree in Agriculture before volunteering in Army Air Corps as certified B17 and B29 pilot trainer. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lt.

He farmed all of his life in McDonough County. He was a member of the American Legion in Vermont, Vermont Christian Church, McDonough County Farm Bureau, president of Industry School Board, and had been awarded the Conservation Family of the Year.

Cremation rites have been accorded. Private inurnment will be held at a later date. Clugston-Tibbitts Funeral Home in Macomb is in charge of arrangements.
