Following are the obituaries that are included in the current issue

Albert Coil

Albert L. Coil, 78, of Browning died at 4:10 p.m. June 29, 2008, at his home.

He was born Aug. 12, 1929, in Souix Falls, S.D., a son of Henry and Estella Harper Coil. He married Evelyn Grace Thompson on Oct. 9, 1951, in Peoria. She survives.

Also surviving are two sons, David (and Bernice) Coil and Jim (and Bettie) Coil, both of Browning; one daughter, Anita (and Orvel) Hall of Rushville; one sister, Martha Elliott of Falls Church, Va.; two grandchildren; two step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by five brothers, Floyd, Don, Ross, Carroll and Benjamin Coil.

He worked for 20 years at Caterpillar in East Peoria and 20 years at Illinois Power in Havana.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria with Gary Sheets officiating. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the memorial home. Burial will be in Astoria Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the family in care of Farmers State Bank of Astoria.

Ervin "Cocky" Murk

Edwin MurkErvin L. “Cocky” Murk, 97, of Pleasant View died at 12:45 a.m. June 24, 2008, at his home.

He was born July 5, 1910, a son of Arthur and Grace Brekenmaker Murk. He married Gladys Nelson on Jan. 11, 1941, in Palmyra, Mo. She died Aug. 30, 1994.

He also was preceded in death by one brother, Russell Murk; and two sisters, Dorothy Murk and Lucille Bramhall.

Surviving are one son, Ronnie (and Susan) Murk of Pleasant View; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was an underground coal miner in the Pleasant View area for many years. He also worked as a farm hand before purchasing his own farm. For many years, he raised Shetland Ponies and later horses.

He was baptized in the Methodist faith and was a member of Schuyler Farm Bureau, National Rifle Association and Rushville Moose Lodge #506.

Services were held Friday at Wood Funeral Home in Rushville with Rev. John Sowers officiating. Burial was in Rushville City Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

Janet Ramsey

Janet K. Ramsey, 67, of Lewistown died at 9 a.m. Thursday, June 26, 2008, at home.

She was born May 19, 1941, in Lewistown, a daughter of Clifford J. and Edith Lillabelle Adkison Graham. She married Dale “Georgie” Ramsey on Oct. 19, 1974, in Astoria. He survives.

Also surviving are twin sister, Judith Buckley of Havana; one niece; and two great nieces.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Larry Graham.

She worked for Ben Franklin in Lewistown, 11 years; Atwood Manufacturing in Havana, four years; and Astoria Fibra-Steel, three years. She last worked at Graham Hospital in the housekeeping department in Canton.

She attended Isabel Church in Duncan Mills.

Services were held Monday at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria with Sue Roat officiating. Burial was in Laurel Hill Cemetery in Havana.

Memorials may be made to the family in care of Mid American National Bank in Lewistown.

Sophia Sherrod

Sophia Noelle Sherrod, infant daughter of Damon and Tara Cox Sherrod of Astoria, was stillborn at 11:58 p.m. June 27, 2008, at Graham Hospital in Canton.

She also was preceded in death by maternal great-grandfathers, Max Cox and Loren Red Howell.

Surviving are her parents of Astoria; one brother, Benjamin Sherrod at home; maternal grandmother, Connie Gunter of Astoria; maternal grandfather, Kent (and Debbie) Allen of Jacksonville; paternal grandmother, Bonnie (and Tom) Wilson of Colchester; paternal grandfather, Damon Sherrod of Deptford, N.J.; maternal great-grandmother, Sandra Howell of Astoria; maternal great-grandfather, Len (and Linda) Allen of Rushville; maternal great-grandmother, Pat (and Terry) Layne of Manito; paternal great-grandfather, Benny James of Colchester; and paternal great-grandmother, Jodi (and Jim) Kieffer of Auburn, Wash.

Graveside services were held Monday at Astoria Cemetery with  Gary Sheets officiating. Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria was in charge of arrangements.

Leona Skiles

Leona R. Skiles, 89, of Macomb, formerly of Astoria, died at 2:55 a.m. June 28, 2008, at Bickford Cottage of Macomb.

She was born Oct. 5, 1918, in Woodland Township, Fulton County, a daughter of John and Mary Burgard Baum. She married Charles Edmund “Bud” Skiles on Oct. 28, 1939, in Palmyra, Mo. He died July 1, 2004.

She also was preceded in death by one son, Edmund Eugene Skiles; three brothers, Russell, John Rodney and Ronald Baum; and three sisters, Gartha Royer, Frances Heller and Lola Mae Huff.

Surviving are one daughter, Diana (and Ernie) Welchel of Peru; one son, Darrell (and Carolyn) Skiles of Colchester; three brothers, Raymond (and Waltrau) Baum of Columbia, S.C., Richard (and Anne) Baum of Quincy and Robert (and Joan) Baum of Ipava; three sisters, Margaret Wells of Muscatine, Iowa, Rosalie (and Bill) Harvey of Columbus, Texas, and Judy (and Bill) Kellog of Elwood; nine grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

She was a nurses aid at Culbertson Memorial Hospital in Rushville from 1959-1970. She then was an LPN at Astoria Care Center from 1970-1986.

She was a member of Fulton County Farm Bureau.

Services were held Tuesday at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria with Rhonda Brown officiating. Burial was in Astoria Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Bickford Cottage of Macomb or American Diabetes Association.

Mary Tippett

Mary E. Tippett, 82, of Astoria died at 7:03 a.m. June 30, 2008, at Graham Hospital in Canton.

She was born July 1, 1925, in Hot Springs, Ariz., the daughter of Kavanaugh and Clara Vivian Hargrave Douglass. She married Dr. James F. Tippett on Nov. 18, 1951, in Hot Springs. He survives.

Also surviving are one son, Mark (and Jill) Tippett of Lewistown; one brother, Jim (and Barbara) Douglass of Buford, Ga.; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother, John Douglass.

She worked for Stevens Publishing Company in Astoria for many years.

She was a member of Astoria United Methodist Church.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria with Rev. Beth Nelson officiating. Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Friday at the memorial home. Burial will be at Astoria Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Astoria Rescue Squad.
