David Watkins

David WatkinsDavid L. Watkins, 51, of Rushville, formerly of Waggoner, died at 7:45 a.m. May 17, 2013, as the result of a motorcycle accident in Virginia, Ill.

He was born Dec. 7, 1961, in Springfield, a son of John L. and Donna Thacker Watkins. He married Amy Osborne on Nov. 29, 2003, at Green Pastures Christian Camp Ground near Meredosia. She survives.

Also surviving are three sons, Gabriel, Isaiah and Jacob, all at home; his mother, Donna Watkins of Taylorville; two brothers, Tony (and Kim) Watkins of Waggoner and Bill Watkins of Morrisonville; and two sisters, Linda Ash of Wentzville, Mo., and Joyce Bandy of Raymond.

He was preceded in death by his father.

He first worked managing several service stations in Litchfield, while serving as pastor at Waggoner Christian Church. He received a masters in divinity degree from Lincoln Christian Seminary. He then was a mechanic at Sloan Implement in Carlinville.

In 2003, he moved to Rushville to become pastor of Bethany Bible Church near Camden. He also worked at Eyler Auto Center and as a driver and assistant at Wood Funeral Home, both in Rushville. He then worked as a Security Therapy Aide at Rushville Department of Human Services Treatment Facility before transferring to a case worker with DHS in Springfield, while also serving as pastor of Sangamon Valley Presbyterian Church near Chandlerville.

He was a Cub Scout den leader for Pack 35. He also served as Community Spiritual Director for Promiseland Chrysalis.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Wood Funeral Home in Rushville with Carl Wiggins officiating. Burial will follow in Rushville City Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to an education fund for his sons.
