Mary Jane WelchMary Jane Welch, 89, of Cuba died at 12:08 p.m. March 5, 2009, at Sunset Manor Nursing Home in Canton.

She was born Jan. 11, 1920, in St. Charles, Mo., a daughter of James R. and Charlotte Schneider Hayden. She married James K. Welch on Sept. 25, 1941, in Chicago. He died May 5, 1998.

She also was preceded in death by one daughter and one brother.

Surviving are two sons, James W. (and Teresa) Welch and Mark H. (and JoEllyn) Welch, both of Cuba; three daughters, Mary Ann (and Edmundo) Bendezu of New Canaan, Conn., Kathleen E. (and Howie) Welch of Norman, Okla., and Virginia J. (and Ted) Moody of Normal; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She graduated from Maryville College in St. Louis, Mo., in 1941. She was office manager of the former Welch Clinic in Cuba.

She was a member of Cuba Christian Church; PEO-Chapter CB of Cuba; American Legion Auxiliary of Cuba; Order of Eastern Star, Ipava Chapter; Cuba Junior Women’s Club; Cuba Senior Women’s Club; and Cuba Park District Board. She was a Republican Precinct Committeewoman for many years.

Cremation will be accorded. A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Friday at Henry-Lange Memorial Home in Cuba with Rev. Ardith Corsaw officiating. Private inurnment will be held Saturday at Cuba Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m. Friday at the memorial home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Spoon River Library District or Putman Township Park.
