Fred S. Wise, 85, of Vero Beach, Fla., formerly of Champaign, Mahomet and Vermont, died Monday, April 29, 2002, at Indian River Memorial Hospital in Vero Beach.

Memorial services were held May 11 at Asbury United Methodist Church, Vero Beach. Lowther Crematory Services of Vero Beach was in charge of arrangements.

He was born Aug. 26, 1916, at Sterling, a son of Clyde and Jenna Frazer Wise. He married Elizabeth "Betty" L. Hoornbeek on Nov. 4, 1939. She survives.

Also surviving are a son, Carl Wise of Vero Beach; three daughters, Nancy Wilson of Rochester, N.Y., Margaret Noonan of Champaign and Barbara Livernash of Aurora, Colo.; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son and a grandson.

He grew up in Vermont and graduated from Vermont High School. He attended Monmouth College, where he met his wife. He graduated from a four-year apprenticeship as a tool and die maker at Lockheed Aircraft Corp., Burbank, Calif., in 1942. He served in the Navy as an electronics technician during World War II in the Pacific Theater.

He graduated with a bachelor's degree in education from the University of Illinois. He retired in 1981 as a technical services supervisor in education research in the physics department at the U of I, where he worked for 24 years.

He served on the zoning board in Mahomet and as a trustee and lay representative for Asbury United Methodist Church in Vero Beach.
