Jonesie Elizabeth “Betty” Simmons, 86, of rural Rushville died at 5:10 p.m. Aug. 10, 2009, in Culbertson Long Term Care.

She was born Oct. 24, 1922, in Roanoke, Va., the daughter of Russell and Essie June Smiley West. She married Earl Simmons on Aug. 24, 1955, in Takoma Park, Md. He survives.

Also surviving are one nephew, Bill (and Toni) West of Columbus, Ohio; and her adopted family, James (and Nancy) Crosby and children Leah, Hannah and Anne Crosby of Rushville.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, William and Aaron West.

She graduated from Washington Sanitarium and Hospital as a registered nurse in 1949, and received a bachelor of science degree from Columbia Union College in 1951.

She worked as a nurse, was a teacher at Pacific Union College in California and in the public health department for many years until retirement.

She was a member of Seventh Day Adventist Church where she was a pianist for many years.

Cremation will be accorded. Worthington Funeral Home in Rushville is in charge of arrangements.
