Byron Smith, 88, of Cuba died at 3:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, 2000, at Graham Hospital in Canton.

He was born April 1, 1912, in Concord, the son of Austin W. and Cora Caldwell Smith. He married Aldene C. Murphy on May 9, 1936, in Cuba. She died July 27, 1994.

Surviving is one sister, Margaret Moore of Lewistown, and one niece.

He was a World War II Army veteran.

He worked at Day & Palin IGA for 43 years, retiring in 1982. He was a former alderman for the City of Cuba.

He was a member of Table Grove Lodge 939, AF&AM, and Cuba Senior Citizens.

He was a 60-year member of Cuba United Methodist Church, where he was a former custodian.

Services were held Saturday at his church with Revs. Randy McGeehon and Jon Sims officiating. Burial was in Cuba Cemetery. Henry-Lange Memorial Home in Cuba was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to his church or the Cass-Putman Rescue Squad.
