Carl N. Smith, 94, of Galesburg, died at 12:54 a.m. Friday, Jan. 29, 1999, at OSF St. Mary Medical Center.
He was born June 16, 1904, in Otto, a son of Burton C. and Laura Mae Lancaster Smith. He married Mattie L. Smith on Sept. 21, 1922, in Astoria. She died Jan. 2, 1946. He married Gladys Brown. She preceded him in death. Two sons, Carl and Leland, two sisters and two grandchildren also preceded him in death.
Surviving are three daughters, Donna Moore of Peoria, Maxine Homer of Abingdon and Margery Albin of Galesburg; one son, Loren of Peoria Heights; one brother, Everett of Keokuk, Iowa; one sister, Clara Crocker of Burlington, Iowa; 17 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and 18 great-great-grandchildren.
He was a farmer in west-central Illinois and Missouri for several years and then started a horse ranch in Apple Valley, Calif. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Florida.
Services were held Monday at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria. Burial was in Summum Cemetery in Summum.
