Vera MartinVera L. Martin, 87, of Smithfield died at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 1, 2008, at Graham Hospital extended care.

She was born July 11, 1921, in rural Smithfield, a daughter of Frank and Gladys Strode Wilson. She married Charles K. Martin on Aug. 15, 1942, in Springfield, Ga. He died Oct. 14, 1990.

She also was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.

Surviving are two sons, Mike Martin of Canton and Charles William (and Oksana) Martin of Canton; one daughter, Judi (and Glenn) Blakley of Smithfield; two sisters, Arlene Randall of Orlando, Fla., and Helen (and Sam) Simms of West Peoria; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was a retired school teacher having taught third grade at Smithfield Grade School where she also had served as principal. She also worked at Pioneer Seed Plant in Good Hope.

She attended Brock United Methodist Church in Smithfield.

She was a former treasurer for the Village of Smithfield, and a former Cass Township Cemetery Board member.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Henry-Lange Memorial Home in Cuba with Ardith Corsaw officiating. Visitation will be held Thursday from 5-7 p.m. at the memorial home. Burial will be in Baughman Cemetery in rural Smithfield.
