Katherine MattsonKatherine Marie “Kay” Mattson, 72, of Rushville died at 4:50 a.m. Dec. 27, 2007, at Culbertson Long Term Care Facility in Rushville.

She was born Feb. 20, 1935, in Aledo, the daughter of John James and Mary Theresa Laktas Elas. She married Robert Leo “Skip” Mattson on June 28, 1958, in Aledo. He died June 28, 1996.

Surviving are two sons, Douglas Robert Mattson of Washington, D.C., and Dr. Bradley Robert (and Diane) Mattson of Lake Forest; one daughter, Kristin Katherine (and Robert A.) Brandon of Rochester; her fiancee, Gene Ralston of Rushville; and four grandchildren.

She earned her bachelor of science degree from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisc., and her master of health education from Western Illinois University. For 17 years, she taught science at Rushville Junior High School and five years in second grade at Webster Elementary School in Rushville, retiring in 1994.

She was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church in Rushville, Schuy-Rush Audubon Society, Illinois Artisans Association, Schuyler Arts Council, Great River Watercolor Society and several bridge clubs. For 13 years, she was a Schuyler County republican chairwoman.

A funeral mass was held Monday at St. Rose Catholic Church in Rushville with Father Marcel Kaberwa officiating. Burial was in Rushville City Cemetery. Wood Funeral Home in Rushville was in charge of arrangements.
