Spencer E. Murphy, 80, of Canton died at 7:20 a.m. Friday, June 15, 2001, at Graham Hospital.

He was born Dec. 15, 1920, in Cuba, a son of Clarence and Mary Ellen Bunch Murphy. He married Virginia Rorer in 1941.

He later married Lela Patricia Noe. She preceded him in death.

He also was preceded in death by one brother.

He married Elizabeth Hunt on Oct. 24, 1985, in Hannibal, Mo. She survives.

Also surviving are one son, Richard of Ipava; two stepsons, Raymond McClaskey and Michael McClaskey, both of Canton; four stepdaughters, Karen Wooster, Yvonne Bowton and Kimberly McClaskey, all of Canton, and Brenda Yocum of Galesburg; 27 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one sister, Bertha Gasparovich of Cuba.

A World War II Army veteran, he was a member of American Legion Post 16.

He retired from International Harvester Co. in Canton as a machine operator.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Services were held Monday at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton with Rev. Maureen Stein officiating. Burial was in White Chapel Memory Gardens, where military rites were accorded.

Memorials may be made to his church, Cancer Research or Spoon River Hospice at Graham Hospital.
