David Kurt

Father David Kurt, 70, a Catholic Priest, of Dubuque, Iowa, formerly of Bushnell died at 4:55 p.m. Dec. 7, 2007, at his residence.

He was born Jan. 2, 1937, in Cascade, Iowa, a son of Frederick and Nora Devaney Kurt.

Surviving are two brothers, Noel (and Betty) Kurt of Dubuque and Mark (and Suzanne) Kurt of Buffalo Grove; and two sisters, Natalie Kurt of Dubuque and Mary Dianne (and Don) Simon of Cuba City, Wis.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Leon; and two sisters, Mary Edith and June Manning.

He graduated from St. Columbkilles Grade and High schools in 1955, and from Loras College in 1959, both in Dubuque, and received his masters in mathematics from Illinois State University at Normal. He attended University of Iowa and studied religion and philosophy prior to seminary.

He graduated from Theological College at Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Peoria by Bishop Edward W. O’Rourke, DD, on May 28, 1977, at St. Pius X Church in Rock Island.

He served as associate pastor at Epiphany Church in Normal his first three years, then Holy Family Church in Oglesby. In 1983, he was appointed pastor at Saint Bernard’s Church in Bushnell, with mission parishes, Saint Rose in Rushville and Saint Augustine in Saint Augustine.

He retired in 2006 and moved back to Dubuque, where he worked as a substitute teacher at Wahlert High School.

A Memorial Mass was held at St. Paul Catholic Church in Macomb with Monsignor Richard Pricco and Father Thomas Holloway officiating. Dodsworth-Piper-Wallen Funeral Home was in charge of local arrangements.
