He was born Dec. 5, 1930, in Neponset, the son of Donald H. and Kathryn E. Buckman Gauwitz. He married Alberta L. Wiles on Nov. 8, 1951, in Chillicothe. She survives.
Also surviving are four sons, Pastor Roy (and Cindy) Gauwitz of Chillicothe, Joseph (and Lorrie) Gauwitz of Mossville, Clifford (and Lisa) Gauwitz of Pekin and Eric Gauwitz of Bartonville; three daughters, Dianna (and Mark) Bickerman of Washburn, Vickie Gauwitz of Peoria and Aldonna (and Jason) Markum of Killeen, Texas; five sisters, Rose "Rosie" (and Bud) Dewalt and Deloris "Dolly" (and Michael) Jacobs, both of Sparland, Julia (and Leonard) Newell of Antioch, Tenn., Linda (and Mel) Greenhalgh of Dunlap and Donna (and Bruce) Halverson of Peoria; 15 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Darlene Sargent; and one granddaughter.
He worked for Operating Engineers Local #649 for 34 years, retiring in 1996.
He was a member of Operating Engineers Local #649.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Covenant Fellowship Outreach, 927 North Second St., Chillicothe, with Pastor Roy Gauwitz officiating. There will be no visitation. Cremation rites have been accorded. Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria is in charge of arrangements.
