James Garbe

James R. Garbe, 59, of Mattoon, died at 8:20 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 11, 1999, at the Odd Fellow-Rebekah Home.

He was born in Effingham on July 5, 1940, a son of Victor and Esther McCain Garbe.

He was preceded in death by his father.

He is survived by his mother; two sisters, Luella Garbe of Mattoon and Virginia Ostergren of Alameda, Calif.; and two brothers, Harold (Shirley) Garbe of Orlando, Fla., and Albert (Lori) Garbe of Mattoon.

He was a 1964 graduate of E.I.U. He taught in high schools in Astoria and West Chicago. He owned and operated a gift shop in Boulder, Colo., for ten years and was employed by Sears Roebuck & Co. in Santa Fe, N.M., prior to moving to Mattoon this year.

He was a member of the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Mattoon.

Services were held at his church with Rev. Bruce D. Osborne and Rev. Ronald Schmidt officiating. Burial was in the Dodge Grove Cemetery. The Schilling Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
