Robert Irvin Barnes, 78, of the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy, formerly of Galesburg and Abingdon, died at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 26, 1999, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy.

He was born March 20, 1921, in Fairbury, a son of Bernard A. and Grace Mae Brown Barnes. He married Mary McCormick. He later married Ruby Donaldson Johnson on Jan. 14, 1949. She preceded him in death.

Also preceding him in death were two brothers.

Surviving are three daughters, Linda Barnes of Naperville, Doris (Jerry) Wynn of Galesburg and Denise Neuhaus of East Peoria; three sons, David of New York, Delmar (Mary) of East Galesburg and Denis (Jerry) of Astoria; one brother, Cecil (Sadie) of Sarasota, Fla.; one sister, Laura Mae Hart of West Palm Beach, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was a World War II veteran, serving from 1944 to 1946. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was an office machines repairman for Wilkinson’s Office Supply in Galesburg for more than 20 years.

Services were held Tuesday at All Faiths Chapel at the Illinois Veterans home in Quincy with Rev. James McCoy officiating. Burial with full military rites was in Sunset Cemetery in Quincy. Zehender-Robinson-Stormer-Cookson Funeral Home in Quincy was in charge of arrangements.
