Robert H. Brown, 79, Dubuque, Iowa, died at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 10, 1997, at his residence.

He was born Aug. 8, 1917, in Hamilton, a son of Franklin and Millie Ensign Brown. He married Marie Varner. He later married Letha Lippe on March 16, 1941, in Keokuk, Iowa.

Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Kathaleen J. Schmitz, Dubuque, and Janice L. Kirchner, Keokuk, Iowa; three sons, Kenneth L. Brown, Northridge, Calif., Keith L. Brown, Dubuque, and Robert E. Brown, Keysport; 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; three sisters, Mary Lou Schmitz, Earlville, Iowa, Hope Fowler, Zephyrhills, Fla., Ruth Ann Moore, Germany, [and two brothers] Frank Brown, Oroville, Calif., and Walter Brown, Monitor, Wash.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert H. Brown, Homer Brown, and Ralph Petersen; and one sister, Betty White.

He served in the 15th Army Air Force in World War II and was stationed at Mandeuria, Italy. He was a ball turret gunner on the B-24 Liberator heavy bombers. He worked for John Deere Dubuque Works for 32 years, retiring in 1974. He was a member of UAW Local 94 and the John Deere retirees.

Having a great interest in the study of genealogy, Robert devoted 25 years of his life to researching his family history. After his retirement, he and his wife travelled to meet the people who contributed to his research. In 1991, he published the Vincent Brown of Kentucky and Ohio genealogy record.

Services were held Thursday at Mueller Memorial Chapel. Burial was in the Linwood Cemetery in Dubuque, Iowa.

Memorials may be given to the Hospice of Dubuque.

Behrs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
