Donald AndersonDonald T. Anderson, 79, of Springfield died at 4:55 a.m. Jan. 16, 2017, at his home.

He was born Jan. 19, 1937, in Springfield, the son of Donald T. and Lucille A. Leonard Anderson. He married Judith Skiles on Oct. 28, 1967, in Springfield. She survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Lori (and Rich) McDonald of Girard; one son, Brian Anderson of Springfield; “Purdue” son, Chris (and Bethany) Clopton of Lafayette, Ind.; and four Clopton grandchildren.

He was employed by School District 186 of Springfield. He also worked at Simplex Engine Generator Control Systems, Motorola, ISBE, IDPH, Asbestos Professional Services in Breese, the Environmental Institute of Marietta, Ga., and served as a consultant to the USEPA in Washington, D.C. He also taught asbestos-related courses nationally and internationally.

He was in the United States Marine Corps and the United States Naval Reserve.

He graduated from Ridgeley Grade School and Lanphier High School in Springfield. He then earned his Bachelors of Science from Purdue University in 1959, his Masters from Sangamon State University (now UIS) in 1975 and his Doctorate from SIU Carbondale in 1984. He served on the staff at Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Ga., as an Adjunct Professor.

He was a member of Central Baptist Church in Springfield and had served on many boards and committees. He was previously a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Elks Club, ANSAR Shrine, was a 32nd Degree Mason, the Scottish Rite Bodies, Legion of Honor and the Firefighter’s Club. He also was chief of the Springfield Auxiliary Police Department when it was disbanded.

Services will be held at a later date at Central Baptist Church in Springfield with Reverend Mary Ellen Sharp officiating. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria. An additional visitation will be held at Central Baptist Church at a later date. Burial will be in Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield.

Memorials may be made to Donald and Judith Anderson Football Scholarship at Purdue University or the Shriners Children’s Hospital.
